Lighting As A Strategy

Have you ever considered using interior LED lighting as a strategy? In commercial applications, lighting can be leveraged to ensure your company product is selected over the competition. Strategic lighting arrangements can reduce the overall quantity of fixtures required in the application thus resulting in cost savings from using less product, cost & time savings from having less wire to route, speedier installation, and reduced manufacturing costs .

Let’s examine the work truck, trailer, specialty vehicle, and emergency vehicle market to determine how lighting can be used strategically to secure new business, keep existing customers, and/or rebrand yourself.

THE STRATEGIC USE OF LED LIGHTING:

1.       AESTHETICS. The light source should always blend into its surroundings. The interior volume of a work truck, trailer, container, ambulance, etc. is very limited.   An “open look, maximized volume” is quickly recognized, appreciated, and leads to sales. This “look” can be achieved through using recessed or low profile (< 0.50”) fixture designs that blend the lighting into the ceiling or wall surface. Certain mounting designs can inset the fixture between roof bows thus resulting in a flush mount with the ceiling for “true” concealment and protection. Large housing fixtures are an unnecessary distraction and draw attention to their enclosure. Additional blending techniques include matching the fixture color to the interior design paint scheme. 2.       TRUE COLOR DIFFERENTIATION. The use of a high Color Rendering Index (CRI) 90 LED is typically found in medical and mission critical military applications, where skin tone, true color identification, or map reading is crucial to decision making.  When entering and occupying a vehicle utilizing a high CRI luminaire, it is very noticeable, and the overall lighting is much more crisp. Consider differentiating and distinguishing your vehicle offering from the competition by offering CRI 90. This can be a significant sales advantage that your competitor will not be capable of reacting to quickly. Most LED light suppliers offer CRI 80 as standard product. This means you can strategically position yourself as a leader and not a follower. Studies show better lighting helps improve decision making, safety, and productivity. 3.       FLICKER ELIMINATION AND WARRANTY PROTECTION. Commercial work truck or emergency vehicles can be subject to simultaneous and varying electrical loads, creating a situation in which voltage changes induce flickering. Best practice LED printed circuit board (PCB) designs will use constant current regulation (not resistors) to smooth out these unexpected voltage drops & spikes, and eliminate the stress on the LED chip, all while preserving your battery life. Use current regulation technology to protect against potential electrical leakage, which could lessen the lifetime and brightness of the LED. A constant current design topology is important for visual appeal (eliminating flickering/improving brightness) and warranty. These regulators will reduce early warranty claims, often inherent in resistor based electrical architecture, which is offered by low-cost suppliers. It is quick and easy to identify a fixture which includes either regulators or resistors as the design technique. 4.       PURCHASE COST REDUCTIONS: Linear fixtures in longer length denominations can be strategically positioned within the interior of a work truck, trailer, or emergency vehicle, to lower lighting costs. Savings can be realized by reducing the quantity of fixtures needed to achieve an optimized illumination.  Longer length combinations (3 ft., 4 ft., 5 ft., 6 ft., 7 ft., 8 ft. up to 16 ft.) can be arranged to reduce the overall number of fixtures required. Installing less fixtures also results in purchasing and using less wire, hardware, and electrical components. Why limit yourself to 2 ft. and 4 ft. lengths when other sizes may fit your application better. Click Here to see our linear lighting fixtures.▲

5.       PRODUCTION SAVINGS:  Less fixtures to mount means quicker installation time, lower assembly costs, and less wire routing.  Improvement in overall production time in the assembly of light fixtures impacts profits and improves your delivery timeline. Additionally, advantages of surface mount fixtures over recessed luminaires include the elimination of machine time or manpower to build the lighting fixture cut-outs, and overall productivity gains. 6.       ILLUMINATION COVERAGE IMPROVEMENT. Longer length linear fixtures provide greater light coverage in comparison to dome or rectangular mount luminaires. Shadowing, dark spots, and illumination unevenness/fall-out are common lighting deficiencies found in smaller sized fixture installations. A study performed by Garnsey Technologies highlights the differences between factory installed dome lighting versus our light fixtures (lux, lumens, CRI, CCT, profile, and more). 7.       QUICK START REPLACEMENT MOUNTS. Take advantage of our build-to-order/build-to-application capabilities when evaluating lighting replacement. Our linear fixtures can be custom sized to cover/fit existing mounting holes. No need to wait until the next vehicle model year or design refreshes, if one of our fixtures can conceal a ceiling imperfection or removal damage. Click Here to see our lights.▲

8.       UPGRADE BRAND PERCEPTION. Market quality and robustness to your customers. The unique design of our linear fixture enables the purchaser to boast about the quality of their lighting used within the vehicle. Successful 1,589 lb. run-over tests are an impressive testimonial to the engineering design and quality of our fixtures. Build quality into your own brand marketing. Also consider the advantages of using a fixture that is primarily constructed of aluminum and doesn’t use a bulky lens that can be easily cracked or broken. Click Here to see our lights. ▲

9.       NIGHTTIME ADVERTISING. Your brand is important. Most work trucks or emergency vehicles showcase their company logo and slogan on the exterior wall of the vehicle. This is fine during daylight hours, but what about nighttime? Darkness conceals your brand and makes the lettering difficult to read. Stand-out from your competition and illuminate your logo during nighttime hours. Visually attractive light sources can wall-wash your vertical surface, with uniform brightness, and make your logo jump-out. An illuminated logo promotes brand awareness, is eye-catching, and helps people remember the name, especially for when they have a need for plumbing, HVAC, electric, or other service. Plus, it just looks cool! Click Here to receive more information on the Garnsey Technologies vehicle advertising light.▲
